A first lesson about real life

Registers, rules and books can wait a little. Begin with a better question: where does English already exist in your learners’ lives?

Opening question

“Where did English appear in your life this week, without school asking you to use it?”

Start with what learners recognise

Music, series, gaming, travel, tutorials and online communities make one point visible: English already exists beyond the classroom.

Classroom prompts

  • What song have you listened to recently?
  • Have you ever changed the language of a game or an app?
  • When could English make a journey easier?
  • What would you like to understand without subtitles?

Move towards one personal goal

Ask each learner to complete: “This year, English could help me…”. It does not need to be a perfect target. It needs to belong to them.

Finish with a 7-Day English Challenge

For seven days, learners choose one short, realistic contact with English: listen to a chorus with lyrics, change an app interface, watch a short video or collect three natural expressions.

The presentation English Isn’t Just a School Subject. It’s Your Access to the World. brings together the sequence, discussion stages and teacher notes.
